The code is set in the PCM only after the engine has completed a minimum of six revolutions after starting, a misfire is detected, and the fuel level is down to the reserve portion of the fuel tank. Along with the Check Engine light, the engine may run rough when P is present. Most commonly, the code illuminates because the fuel level is extremely low and the car is running out of fuel.

If the code is related to a low fuel level, this simple action can clear up the concern. With a fuel tank filled above the minimum level, a mechanic will continue to diagnose the concern by checking connections to the affected cylinder.
Typically, a misfire for a specific cylinder will be present as well. The mechanic can check that the ignition coil connector, fuel injector connector, and ignition cables are fully seated and locking tabs engaged where applicable. Wiring should be checked for corrosion and breaks as well as shorts to ground.
If the condition is still present, the mechanic may begin to swap components on the system with another cylinder to determine which one is faulty. If the DTC follows a component to a different cylinder, they will know which part to replace. The most common mistake when diagnosing P is neglecting to fill the fuel tank first. In many instances, the cause is because of poor fuel flow to the engine because of low fuel level.

The gauges stay that way for a while then apperently begin to function again. This occurence is has gotten more frequent and now includes the trans going into limp mode. Is the pressure control solenoid something that I can replace myself? I searched through previous posts but was unable to find anyone who reported back to confirm which suggested solution actually worked. Some threads suggest replacing the battery and others suggest calling Kirt Trans Expert.

That information is used by the engine control module to fine tune the amount of fuel supplied to the fuel injectors. In the BMW E46 6-cylinder engine, a pair of oxygen sensors is installed in the exhaust manifolds just ahead of the catalytic converters and another pair is in the pipes just after the converters.
Once the engine reaches operating temperature, output from the precatalyst pair of sensors settles into a steady wave pattern between 0 and 1 volt. The lower limit indicates a lean fuel mixture extra oxygen in the exhaustwhich the ECM corrects for by increasing the fuel supply.
This leads to a richer mixture low oxygen content in the exhaust and a higher voltage produced by the oxygen sensor; the ECM then reduces the fuel amount and the cycle continues in this fashion, producing what is called "closed loop" operation. The post-catalyst pair of oxygen sensors ideally detects a steady and unvarying amount of oxygen exiting the catalytic converters.
The ECM uses this information to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.
Oxygen sensors should be replaced everymiles. In a perfect world that would be it, wait until a specified mileage and replace the sensor. However, these sensors fail prematurely, set off oxygen sensor fault codes and reduce fuel economy.
